The Affordable Care Act marketplace has reached a new enrollment milestone of 24 million Americans, bolstered by the extension of enhanced premium subsidies through 2027. The Department of Health and Human Services announced the figures on Monday, noting that enrollment has nearly doubled since the expanded financial assistance was first introduced under the American Rescue Plan Act.

The growth has been particularly strong among previously uninsured adults in states that expanded Medicaid, where marketplace plans offer a seamless transition for individuals whose incomes fluctuate above the Medicaid eligibility threshold. HHS Secretary reports that the national uninsured rate has fallen to a historic low of 7.2%, down from 10.2% just four years ago.

Insurance industry stakeholders are watching closely as Congress debates the future of the enhanced subsidies beyond 2027. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that allowing the subsidies to expire would result in approximately 6 million Americans losing coverage, with average premiums for remaining enrollees rising by 35% or more in the individual market.
